Here is the deal I am a functional medicine doctor and have studied 1000's of hours on this topic and functional medicine in general. This book has brought new research that I have never heard of and I study and read daily.... She write things in a simple manner and she has a great sense of humor. The truth is if you are suffering with a thyroid condition or think you have a thyroid condition even though your doctor said "your labs are normal and your on the correct thyroid meds, so it's in your head and here is a prescription for Prozac". Ok, so now I understand how and why I've struggled the way I have for 20 years, is it too much to ask that the medical field catch up? This book needs to be in the hands of every doctor who has ever prescribed a thyroid medication. I wish I could turn back the clock and read this in my 20s when I first started hypothyroid issues. Unfortunately, my thyroid health deteriorated year after year until it was finally burnt out, massive and cancerous. It has been removed but there was little to no support for how to handle what that has left me with, which is pretty much every symptom on the hypothyroid list... not to worry, though, my TSH level is "normal". Please read this book if you struggle with hypothyroid or Hashimoto's. Please read this book if you love someone with these issues. Skeptical, but the results made me a BELIEVER!

It's Never Too Late...

It's never too late to learn and apply new information. In my 70s, I started practicing the exercises set forth in Katy's new book. When I began, I had to wear orthotics in all my shoes to walk comfortably. I had been unable to walk barefoot for at least 15 years. After following the exercises for a matter of months and using my Earth Shoes, I was able to throw away my orthotics, walk several miles daily without any discomfort, and return to the joys of walking barefoot - especially at the beach. happy feet, happy pelvic floor

i had already learned about katy bowman before this book came out. i found her while i was searching for ways to heal my plantar facsiitis(which i had for 2 years) and my pelvic floor which had not been functioning right since i gave birth 7 years ago. by doing the exercises/ stretches all the time, keeping my feet straight and changing my footwear, i now have no heel pain and can sneeze without peeing. the book contains the essential exercises to do that. she gives you the tools you need to empower yourself to heal your body. i am a dancer and have studied and participated in many different exercises and healing modalities. this has been the only thing that has helped me.

Healthy Feet Are a Birthright!

I'm in my mid seventies; never occurred to me that my stiff feet,overly high arches, bunions, curled toes, and bent over little toes were that way due to neglect not to aging. I considered the largely cosmetic practices of a monthly toe nail polish, daily foot bath and occasional foot massage the outer limits of foot care. This book is fantastic!!! I bought it for my cousin who just became pregnant and it will be my go-to gift for all my expectant friends and family. Not really a journal...

I bought this book before I knew that there were other journals out there, I looked at the first few pages which had questions about my pregnancy... which I liked I want to document my pregnancy the best I can. Before I started writing in it however, I didn't look through the rest of the book. There is more information in it day to day than there is space to write about your own pregnancy. I was at Barnes and Noble yesterday and I saw "The Belly Book" and I WISH I would've gotten that one, and I probably still will since this "journal" isn't really a journal. If you want the information and a journal I would just get "What to expect when you're expecting" and "The Belly Book". Then you get the best of both worlds. Hopefully that is helpful to some of you other preggo ladies out there, I just totally wouldn't recommend it unless you look through the book first and decide that's what you want.

What a wonderful tool!
I purchase this journal in 2002 after I found out I was pregnant with my daugther. After looking at many different journals I decided on this one due to the information given for each day, the questions for each day and the space to make notes. The questions helped to prompt me as to what to make notes of. At first I also had a hard time figuring out the correct dates to enter. Once I got that part figured I was good to go. I liked the size of the book too. I pasted in all the ultrasound pictures, cards I received, pictures of my growing belly and of Daddy hard at work painting the baby's room and putting together the crib. I pressed in flowers from congratulation bouquets and a copy of her foot prints at the very end. It is the only record of her life that we have as she passed away the day before she was due. I am truly grateful for this journal and all the happy memories it holds for us now. I strongly urge all expectant moms to use this journal, it is such a joy to look back on...
Really disappointed with this Journal
I was incredibly disappointed with this journal. The author is overbearing in her advice, especially her dietary recommendations, for which she seems unqualified to give as a Ph.D. and not an MD or dietitian, and she lists no co-authors or resources that would qualify her to be so incredibly repetitive and specific. Especially early on in the journal, I amused myself by counting how many times she emphasizes the word 'organic' per sentence. I'm eating organic, I get it! It doesn't need to be every other word! Additionally, she fixates on weight in a very negative and frustrating way. If my doctor says I'm on track, I don't need a psychologist telling me otherwise and her overemphasis on the subject only highlighted for me that she was not a credible or knowledgeable source.
Space for reflection is inconsistent--I would prefer space for notes, weight, and thoughts to be regularly paced instead of sporadic as it is here. As many others have pointed out, her dates are...

Superior to "What to Expect..."
Back when babies were just daydreams, I recieved "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.

Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked...
Best pregnancy book ever
When we started trying, I bought a lot of pregnancy books. I am now towards the end of my first trimester and this book has been by far the best book I own on this topic.

This book is extremely well organized, very informative and objective, and covers a wide range of topics from pregnancy to birth to breastfeeding.

It is very easy to find what you are looking for. For each week, it explains what your body is going through, how your baby is growing and what emotional changes you could expect. In each month, there is a summary page that lists the problems you may have in that period and tells you when you should call your doctor. There are very nice drawings that show what your baby looks like and how big it is. (Some pictures are real size, for others the book tells what percentage of the real thing the picture is.)

This book had answers to all my questions so far - and I should say, being a very curious first time mom, I had a lot of questions...
Excellent book
I am in the 9th month of my second pregnancy and I love this book. It is a must have for me. I bought the new addition at the begining of this pregnancy and if I have a 3rd child will probably buy a new addition then as well. There are so many questions that arise during pregnancy that this book helps to answer. It also talks about your babies growth and development week by week. Some people have commented that it just has a lot of negative stuff in it. I do not find this to be true. The book is informative about all kinds of different things related to pregnancy, pre-pregnancy and labor. The author states in the book not to read the chapter on when there is a problem unless there is a problem. This book has comforted me in numerous situations when i was worried something was wrong but after reading up on it I realize it is completely normal. Very helpful.

Not done yet, that's why I didn't give 5 stars. We are a couple years into this diagnoses with my dtr, so have been through most of the process. This book is helping me confirm we are going down the right path with our daughter. It's a breath if fresh air and offers me encouragement, because it's been so difficult for us. My daughter is so wonderful and a complete handful, this book helps me focus on the positive, with ADD that can be difficult... Thank you!

As a marriage and family therapist I know the challenges girls and their families have in overcoming ADHD/ ADD. The authors, James Forgan and Mary Anne Rickey have provided a key resource to both the parents and the counselor. The information is presented by developmental milestone so it is easy to apply to each individual child's situation. The book provides parents and their daughter their next steps in addressing challenges at home and at school in a practical and informational manner. It is one of the first resources I reach for when meeting with parents who want to help their daughters!

Great Book for anyone with children.
In the Introduction to this book the author explains that this is not just a cookbook. She explains why she wrote this book and why it is so important for anyone with a baby.

She wants children to grow up not being picky eater but healthy eaters that get excited about new foods to try. She talks about not only taste, but texture also in a sensory rich diet. She also mentions that if your child does not like a certain food the first time, try cooking it differently, or cut it into different shapes.

The book talks about watching children play with raw vegetables. Then have it for dinner, so they are familiar with the veggies before they eat it. She also talks about having the child help in the kitchen as soon as possible. She let her little one start at 18 months old. The child would peel their own clementines, tear the kale leaves from the stems, and peel cooked and cooled tomatoes.

I did not read this book until my baby was 8 months old and we had introduced solids at 6 months. The book completely changed how I am approaching food with my daughter. It helped me be more in tune with her cues and what she does and does not like. I received a review copy of this book, and I have to say I'm very impressed. I have been a fan of the author's blog for sometime, but it is great to have some of her work in print. The book is very well written and is full of beautiful pictures, good information and healthy recipes.
I just had baby number 3 and I am really excited about this book. She includes lots of recipes that are simple, nutrient dense and will appeal even to my picky eaters! No reason to use jarred baby food anymore! Most of these recipes are good for the whole family.
If you are thinking of making your own baby food or looking for good recipes for young children, I recommend this book!

I took an aromatherapy weekend seminar as an introductory to this fascinating subject. Was I surprised as to how interesting and versitile aromatherapy is. An excellent aide to feeding your baby and beyond. I like the chart detailing when is an ideal time to feed a solid and I especially like the myriad of recipes that are offered which would suit the whole family.

Great baby food cook book!
This book has made a great addition to our "baby" cookbooks. The author, Annabel Karmel, shows parents how to make healthy, unprocessed, tasty foods for babies and toddlers. I equally love that many of the recipes for older babies and infants can easily be made for the whole family; this makes dinner time much easier. I like the details of the recipes. Annabel tells exactly how to prepare the ingredients and how to cook/prepare them. However, I wish this book explained the best way to store each recipe. For example, she explains how to prepare pears, but doesn't say if they freeze well or are best eaten right away. I tried to freeze them after I cooked them, but they turned brown and yucky looking. I like that there are suggestions for foods that I normally wouldn't think of feeding my baby (cauliflower, papaya, dried apricots, cantaloupe, parsnip, zucchini, etc). And I like that by incorporating these recipes, my baby will eat a wide range of colors and textures.

The cookbook helps with variety and easy introductions of new foods mixed with food that she already likes. THE BEST BABY SLEEP BOOK ON THE MARKET
This was an excellent book - I cannot tell you how much this book helped our sleepless, colicky infant. But, several friends with non-colicky babies actually recommended this for any infant. This book is a wonderful middle ground for those parents who do not want a severe schedule (BABYWISE) or the opposite end of the spectrum, attachment parenting (Dr. Sears). It was the only book that I found that spoke knowledgeably about colic, and gave the only helpful advice available on the subject (believe me, we tried it all). It is not a cry-it-out book, although some may look at it in that light. What it teaches you is this: 1. watch your child. 2. put him/her down to sleep when you first see the signs of tiredness 3. most children under 6 months do not stay awake for longer than 2-3 hours at a time without needing a nap. 4. DO NOT just put your child down to nap when you feel like it - that's just letting him/her cry, not TEACHING them to sleep. 5. Most children need to go...

I generally like to start my reviews by saying what I liked about the book I read. In my opinion, the best and most important point made by this book is that sleep is vital for babies. Parents should be on the lookout for signs their child might be suffering from lack of it, and should also make sure their lifestyles do not interfere with their child's healthy sleep. I also appreciated the author's input about sleep problems and solutions for older children.
I disagreed most with the idea that it is generally a good idea to allow children to cry as long as it takes to get them to sleep at night. Will this method do long term psychological damage? The author says no, and I agree that is probably correct. Okay, so the child won't be delinquent as a teenager, or hate you as an adult. But as a parent, my question is which method is easiest on the child in the short term, as well as being effective in the long term? Frankly, I don't want my child to be unnecessarily miserable,...

A friend purchased this book for us before our son was born, and we read it cover-to-cover. When our little guy entered the world, it didn't take long to discover that he had horrid colic, acid reflux to boot, and wouldn't even sleep lying down. We used his swing at firt, and as a breastfeeding mom, he often landed in bed somewhere in the middle of the night. I was determined, however, to have him in his crib before I went back to work at 3 months and this book helped me accomplish that... until he was about 6 months.

Once he was old enough to "decide" what he liked and didn't like, and probably due to seperation anxiety- he wouldn't go to sleep easy (cried every night) and began to wake a lot at night, crying for HOURS. Hello, I'm Vienna. Scott's wife, and I'm not big on diet fads, and rarely if ever have the attention span to even embark on reading about them, but after finding the authors on Facebook, I was intrigued by their recipes and food pictures. I purchased this book only a week ago, but dove in to the food preparation while I was still reading. They have some great dessert names: Fat Stripping Frappa, Tummy Tucking ice Cream, Slim Belly Jelly, and Lemon Mousse. . The Skinny Chocolate is fun to make and tastes just the like hardening syrup you pour on ice cream.

Their premise is that our societly is overloaded with carbohydrates so they reccomend eliminating sugar from your diet, and a lot of grains including wheat. Stevia is their sugar substitute. I'm not big on artificial sweeteners, and Stevia has never been an option for me because of it's odd bitter aftertaste, but they have several recommendations for brands of Stevia that have overcome this drawback. I know I will get attacked for this review but I still am going to say it. I LOVE the THM plan because I am losing weight and the authors seem so nice. This is not a negative review of the program or about the authors as people. I am accepting their research on faith.

But I just can't recommend this book to friends to buy, not even for $5 or $10, what's less $20 or $35. When I read a book, I don't want it to be full of typos and grammar mistakes and this one is. The indexes are almost useless. Also, the book rambles like crazy and could be much shorter if the authors clearly stated their facts and opinions instead of the way they did it. I am really surprised it got published as is unless it was some self-publishing thing. The premise of THM is fantastic and I recommend the "diet" to everyone that is having trouble losing weight but I also warn them about how poorly the book is written.
