Now she joins forces with renowned author and activist Elizabeth Davis to offer an enlightening program to help women attain the most empowering and satisfying birth experience possible. While an orgasmic birth can, for some, induce feelings of intense, ecstatic pleasure, it is ultimately about taking control of one’s own body and making the most informed decisions to have a safe, memorable, and joyful birth day.
Whether women choose to give birth at home, in a hospital, or in a birthing center, Orgasmic Birth provides all the necessary tools and guidance to design the birth plan that’s best for them. Featuring inspiring stories from mothers and their partners and filled with practical advice and solutions, this one-of-a-kind resource is the next frontier of natural, intimate childbirth.

FABULOUS!
I am currently almost 40 weeks pregnant and planning a home birth with a midwife who just lent me this newly released book. I have been scouring for natural birth resources for months. I have read dozens of books and seen many films, including the Orgasmic Birth film. I'm so glad this book came out before my due date! I devoured it in 3 days... it is my favorite book on natural birth thus far. This book takes the film and goes much deeper into the research and implications. I've worked with a Neurofeedback therapist for two years who talks about alpha, beta, and theta brain waves... so I was familiar with the lingo. This book did such a great job of explaining the complex connections between the mother's experience of birth and how the brain functions. The different brain wave states correspond to different hormones- fascinating and scientifically based! Yet it is explained in the book so that the layperson can understand. No other natural childbirth book presents birth in this way...

Should be called Elizabeth Davis's Guide to Childbirth
I appreciate this book and what it has to offer parents as a guide to birth from the experience of a well-known and loved midwife. Coming out with this title does a lot to expand our cultural perception of how childbirth can be experienced, and I think this book has a lot of value for interested readers who are unfamiliar with the idea of pleasurable childbirth.

Orgasmic Birth is not strictly focused on the topic of orgasmic birth and has more general information about pregnancy, birth and postpartum which are related of course, but I was expecting something more focused on pleasurable labor and birth itself. I was hoping for a bit more of an in depth discussion on birth as a pleasurable, if not fully sexual, experience in terms of both the physiology of labor and birth and the emotional and embodiment aspects of opening to that kind of birthing experience. It does mention the information that I was looking for, but because of the way that it is organized (or rather, not...

Review :
The Sex Ed. Book I'll Keep Coming Back To
I am the mother of two boys, ages 11 and 13, and I found this book to be the best ever sex education book. The first and perhaps most impressive aspect of the book is that it not only helps you see your child's sexuality through his/her eyes, it also portrays the parents' point of view in a helpful and sympathetic way.
The second element that makes the book so effective is its down-to-earth humor. The authors review the phases of children's sexual development and parental experiences with many funny real life examples that get you chuckling and relaxing. In fact, my boys heard me laughing as I read one section and came over to ask about it. They read the part I was reading and it lead to a very comfortable discussion.
A third aspect of the book I appreciated is that the authors have really done their research. They are not just giving their opinions, they provide concise research information which adds perspective.
Lastly, the authors are very comprehensive. They...
Fun page turner expertly explores sex conundrums for parents
What a great read! I almost finished it in one sitting. This book is not only well-written, it's also chock full of great advice. I found it much more accessible than Deborah Roffman's Sex and Sensibility. It was as if the author knew me and wrote the book for me -- I want my children to grow up with a good attitude about sex, but even so, I feel a little squeamish about these topics. As a mom of a pre-teen and a toddler, I'm glad there's a book out there like this that isn't exclusively focused on teens, though they're well-covered here too. This one's a keeper. Now I've got a great new shower gift idea!

A must buy!
I read the book and wish I had read it sooner and then I gave it to my 15 year old to read as well.

Much better than A chicken's guide to talking turkey with your kids about sex (preachy at best, as in religious zealots).

I think books are a useful tool to open up lines of communication and purchased this author's book, Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know About Sex with a copy of Dr. Ruth's Sex for Dummies for my older teen. I also read and shared, Human Sexuality by Roger R. Hock.

It is my personal feeling that providing your child with information about thier bodies will help them keep themselves healthy. It does not mean we give them our blessings to do whatever they want nor does it mean we have the right to make choices for them. We do as parents have the responsibilities of educating them.

As I have multiple children and liked her reasonable approach I also purchased Dr. Ruth Talks To Kids for my pre-teen. I also...

Millions of healthy women take a powerful medication every day from their mid-teens to menopause - the Pill - but few know how this drug works or the potential side effects. Contrary to cultural myth, the birth-control pill impacts on every organ and function of the body, and yet most women do not even think of it as a drug.

Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks - just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes.

When the Pill was released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication each day when they were not sick. Now the Pill is making women sick.

However, there are a growing number of women looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. In a bid to spark the backlash against hormonal contraceptives, this book asks: Why can't we criticize the Pill?

Review :
Why can't we TALK about the Pill?
In the first ten pages, Holly Grigg-Spall delivers an impassioned description of The Problem, told from personal experience: While Taking Yaz/Yasmin, she thought she was losing her mind. Her sanity, her work as a writer, and, she thought, everything she held dear was collapsing,

In delving into the problem with a trusted girlfriend, a doctor who did not dismiss her concerns, groundbreaking books, her then-boyfriend now-husband, and women that had taken to the Internet to air their personal stories, Ms. Grigg-Spall realized that Yaz was wreaking havoc with her body and mind--and yet, even after stopping it for good, the allure of the Pill beckoned.

To be blunt, Ms. Grigg-Spall has plenty of attitude, wit, and insight and spares no one in the birth control debate--population control advocates, capitalism, our warped commercialized view of sexuality, the patriarchy, pharmaceutical companies, the religious right, the Pill evangelical feminists on the Left who silence...
In Depth
The author has well-researched her topic and is very passionate about it as well. Most American women are put on birth control at a young age without understanding their bodies or their options. The side effects include indigestion, weigh gain, depression, low libido and then a loss of fertility coming off the pill. True women's liberation doesn't come in a pill, it comes in our understanding of our nature.

Postponing Motherhood... at What Cost?
Back when my husband was in medical school, his pharmacology textbook listed seven full pages of adverse side effects associated with oral contraceptive use, including:

- heart attacks
- strokes
- liver tumors
- blood clots
- gall bladder disease
- migraine headaches
- depression
- loss of vision
- urinary tract infections
- yeast infections
- weight gain
- thyroid problems
- high blood sugar

…as well as an increased risk of infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects even after discontinuing use of the Pill.

That was enough to convince us we’d made the right decision when, as newlyweds, we opted to forgo hormonal contraceptives three years (and two babies) earlier.

Yet when we shared this information with family and friends, they remained skeptical. “If the Pill were really that unsafe,” they reasoned, “then doctors wouldn’t prescribe...

Janet Balaskas led a movement of women who refused to give birth lying down.  She has been teaching women about “active birth” ever since.  In this updated and Americanized guide, Balaskas explains how to prepare for and experience a truly natural birth.  She leads the pregnant woman through yoga-based stretching exercises and massage practice, and describes the stages of labor and comfortable positions for each, at home or in a hospital.  Balaskas has also included a chapter on water birth as well as postpartum exercises.

Review :
Must-Have for Natural Childbirth Preparation
Of all the many books I read when preparing for the birth of my first child, this was my favorite. I used the exercises every night and they made a real difference in the ease of my 6 hour delivery. The focus is on physical preparation for labor through easy yoga postures, along with deep breathing and relaxation. The exercises are presented in an easy-to-use sequence, with clear pictures. The remaining text covers issues of pregnancy and birth with a focus on the the physicality of the entire process, espousing the importance of being ACTIVE throughout the process of labor (the antithesis of the traditional medical practice in which women are encouraged to labor from a supine position, despite the fact that this position is the hardest for both mother and baby and does not take advantage of the way our anatomy is designed to work.) The author encourages women to follow our bodies' instincts to discover the best way to move through labor, and illustrates the many different...
one of the BEST books available if you want a natural birth.
I am a childbirth educator and birth attendant living in Australia.I have been helping moms and their partners for nearly 20 years to be informed and confident in their native capacity to give birth normally, without all the unecessary medical intervention that is unfortunately occuring these days. There are heaps of books on birth to buy ,but still I am convinced that if a pregnant mother can only get ONE book-get this one.It is informative and very empowering and the photos in the new edition are fine and the prenatal exercises are great. The chapter on labour is good for dads to read too.It is a book for folks who would prefer a natural birth and the author is well aware of the consequences of routine medical interventions. Working as a midwife I see what goes on when women are not fully informed when they make choices about birth (more complications, more epidurals and alot more fear.)Read this book to see what options there really are available for birthing women. THEN...
Essential Book for Pregnancy and Birth
If I could recommend one book for my clients (I'm a doula), it would be this one. For most of us in the field, the information isn't new (upright positions are best; being able to center yourself and relax are extremely important; moving around is a vital coping mechanism..), but for many pregnant women and their partners, this information will be new and invaluable. The yoga exercises are practical and simple, and I found the how-to section for partners (for the "dangling" positions) fabulous... a lot of other books suggest a supported squat, but they don't tell the partner HOW to support the squat safely.. this book does. It is also very confidence-inspiring, realistic, and affirming. If you are pregnant, BUY THIS BOOK! It may change your whole outlook and perception of pregnancy and childbirth. It ought to be required reading!

These days, many mothers-to-be find themselves torn between the desire for a natural childbirth with minimal medical intervention and the peace of mind offered by instant access to life-saving technology that only a hospital can provide. In Natural Hospital Birth, doula Cynthia Gabriel asserts that there is no good reason that women in North America should not be able to have both. She shows expectant mothers what they can do to avoid unnecessary medical interventions and how to take initiative and consciously prepare for the kind of birth they want to have. Also included are inspiring stories from other women who know firsthand that natural birth in the hospital is possible. With this book, mothers-to-be will be equipped with the knowledge they need to ensure a satisfying hospital birth that they will look back on with peace and joy.

Review :
hesitant to commit to natural birth? read this book!
Where to begin?? I have one child and am expecting another in a few months. My first labor and delivery was not natural by any means. It was a very typical American hospital birth with plenty of intervention. I didn't find the experience particularly empowering at all. When I found out I was pregnant this time, I started considering the idea of a natural birth. I really didn't think I could do it. My OB said things like "just be flexible, you might change your mind" and "you don't have to be a hero." I doubted my ability to do it without drugs!

Funny that once I picked up this book, I saw Cynthia Gabriel mentioning some of these exact comments I got from my OB as a sign that one's provider was not open or supportive of natural birth. As I read the book, I became more empowered and confident that I could in fact have a natural labor and delivery. And as I was re-reading the book in my 7th month of pregnancy, I decided that I wouldn't have it any other way and set out to...
Best chance to have exactly what the title describes - read this book!
As an L&D nurse, turned doula, turned CNM-to-be, I was skeptical about this book to say the least. I've worked in some of the most medicalized environments you can find in the childbirth world, and I know first-hand all the tricks the hospital staff will use to accomplish their goals while potentially robbing the mother of her own. The terms "natural", "hospital", and "childbirth" don't belong in the same sentence with what I've seen in my experiences over the past 8 years. I'm not sure what I expected this book to be, but I'll say I was so very pleasantly surprised. As I begin my midwifery training, I'll say for full disclosure's sake, I want to work as far away from a hospital (theoretically, not physically) as I can. However, this book is a great tool for women who do still desire to give birth in a hospital but without unnecessary medical interventions. Granted, once you set foot in a hospital, there is a decent risk that things might be done to you that you don't want, but this...
Extremely disappointed
I had high hopes for this book after seeing all of the positive reviews, but as I read this book I went from feeling a little disappointed to being almost angry at the book by the end. I am a birth doula and I bought this book in hopes of picking up some ideas to help my clients who want/have to have hospital births and still want natural births. I didn't get that at all- and I would even go so far as to recommend that the mommas NOT read this book. I'll try to use some quotes from this book to illustrate what I didn't like.

The first thing I took issue with is the overall tone of this book. Basically it says that in order to get a natural birth in a hospital you just have to stand your ground, tell the doctors that you want a natural birth, and keep asking for "one more hour". This may work well if the staff really is pushing for interventions based on scheduling, doctor preference, etc (as does happen unfortunately), but what about situations where there really is a...

The New Go-to Guide for Pregnancy!
This book is fantastic!!! I bought it for my cousin who just became pregnant and it will be my go-to gift for all my expectant friends and family. If you can't have Lori by your side during your pregnancy, then this book is the next best thing. It is a all-encompassing book that will help any expecting mom feel grounded, connected to her baby and lay the foundation for a healthy pregnancy. I love the recipe for Lori's LaborAde, the easy-to-follow checklists, diagrams for prenatal yoga poses and tips for eating healthy on a budget, plus anything else you would need to know but not the typical info you find in other pregnancy books!

The Mindful Mom -to -Be is a go to guide and support system for one of the most important times of a woman's life.
Creating a supportive and healthy foundation mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically is so important during any life change or transition. This is even more important in embarking on the 'Path of Motherhood. A healthy foundation always starts with 'us' personally; however we don't always know how to develop and maintain this foundation. Lori Bregman in her book: "The Mindful Mom-to-Be not only outlines this for us, but acts as supportive partner via her health information, life advice, natural remedies, mind-body exercises, meditation; as well as the vast practical experience she has from being a practicing Doula. You can see why she is not only so sought after, but that her book is considered one of the 'must reads' for not only mothers, but any woman embarking on new level of growth.

I have first hand experienced working with Lori as my doula and I can't recommend her enough! Her book is full of wonderful tips and advice for the mom to be. As a new mom I had no idea what to expect and Lori was a wealth of knowledge, love and resources.

Best Birthing/Labor book for MOM too!
I've delivered 7 children and am now pregnant with my 8th. WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY 1st?!?!? Everything the book said the mother would feel was RIGHT on!!! The title is deceiving because it says it is for a "Birth Partner". It would definitely be helpful to them, but I got this book for myself and found it even more educating then I expected.
I especially appreciated that it didn't seem to have a hidden agenda or preference. Having had hospital/epidural births and natural births myself, I can see the benefits of both as each birth is different. I never felt there was an anti-home birth or anti-hospital birth sentiment to it. It was information for BOTH of them.
My favorite part was the detailed What-is-Mom-going-to-feel during _______ stage of labor. Then there were suggestions on how to relieve that, etc.
I highly highly recommend this book. I have read many (SCADS!!!) of birthing books and this is my favorite so far.

My wife expected me to be the birth expert
As a first time dad i wanted to be very much the involved father from the first step. I had taken enough birth and baby caring classes to understand the basics for the new baby to baby. My wife and i wanted to do a (as much as possible) natural birth. This means no drugs and no surgery. Yo go girl! What really scared me was that from everyone i talked with, complications occur and you sometimes had to make a quick decision on limited knowledge on the spot.

This is where i think that Penny did a great job of breaking things down. She has a great background in natural births. So many tips for comforting the mother. Birthing is a marathon. After 20 hours watching my wife go through labor, i could still remember some tips to help her cope. It was great for someone needing to know how the last few hours of pregnancy and the first first hours of newborn life can be,

Thanks for making the book read more like a series of personal accounts vs. charts and studies...
Excellent book, terrible e-book
As a new dad with a now 7-month old son, this book helped me prepare for what my wife was going to go through and give me the tools and confidence to help her through everything she went through. I would recommend this book to all new fathers. HOWEVER, do not get the e-book. There are lots of tables and pictures that do not translate well into the smaller e-book format. Also, as a reference, this is much better used as a physical book.
