Fantastic book
Let me preface my review by saying that I am skeptical about the philosophy behind imago therapy. I think it's simplistic and outdated to try to locate the source of all psychological problems in one's childhood. This is particularly true for couples. They may have problems because they have different personalities (e.g., one is an introvert and one is an extrovert) or because one partner has undergone a traumatic event, such as disease or loss of a close family member.

Having said this, I found the book absolutely fantastic, and would give it 6 stars if I could. The book doesn't really talk about the philosophic underpinnings of imago therapy. It just uses one key concept from this therapy approach (a specific form of dialog where one mirrors, then validates and empathizes with, the statements of the partner) as the key ingredient in a long list of exercises that help partners to develop an intimate connection. I am a Certified Imago Therapist and work with both couples and individuals in my private practice. This is a great book and one that I highly recommend to couples when it comes to talking about the often challenging, difficult, exciting and titillating subject of sex! For me the single most valuable aspect of this book is that it is *validating*- that I'm not the only one who has experienced lows during this "happiest" time in my life. Through the use of other brides' experiences and quotes, this book validates the losses (e.g., place of Dad in your life), the fear of changes (loss of name, loss of single independence), the disappointments (the ring, the proposal, the absence of deceased loved ones), and generally the feeling of being overwhelmed by the giant Wedding Creature that seems to overtake your life. What an amazing book!
First off, let me cut to the chase: this book has been a true gift! Two months away from my wedding and I was starting to feel miserable. Miserable? Huh? Yes, it's true. You can feel miserable right at "the happiest time of your life". Feeling sure this must mean I didn't really want to get married, I began to panic. Why all the confusion? Fortunately, this book was recommended to me. I think I began to cheer before I finished the intro. I am normal! This book helped me to see that there is so much more involved in getting married than what we see in the magazines. Sheryl Nissinen provides such clear insights into the complex emotions brides feel throughout their engagement and into the first year of marriage. If nothing else, this book allows brides to feel everything and not feel "wrong". Several times my jaw dropped in amazement, "she's in my head!" And several times I had to just sit and cry. This book fills a cavernous niche for brides and newlyweds
I went to a bookstore yesterday looking for relief in a book about my post wedding angst. Viola! I'm in my second month of marriage and my husband and I are discovering why they say the first year is the most difficult. We're both definitely going through our own personal growing pains. Sometimes it doesn't feel like the "us" I've known at all. So, upon rapidly purchasing Sheryl's book and reading as much as I could squeeze in last night, I'm at least feeling more assured that these feelings are quite normal.

This book is wonderful: not only an excellent read, it is informative, practical and comforting.

I am the impatient woman this book describes - although very philosophical, relaxed and healthy, I don't want to mess around with "seeing how things go". I have become very tired of reading material, both in books and on-line, which seems to perpetuate what I can only describe as false myths. There are next to no books of this kind written by academics who can pull together scientific facts to portray a real (and comforting) picture of how to get pregnant. The book debunks some very common myths by presenting facts from scientific studies in an easy-to-understand format.

I had just got to grips with OPKs and basal charts, when I got hold of this book. I have read and re-read it a number of times in my TTC journey. It's to-the-point, detailed, scientifically backed up and most of all, just comforting. I cannot reiterate how reassuring it is to read a book written...
Just okay

I'd recommend ordering the "Taking Charge of your Fertility" book over this one. I read the "Taking Charge" book when I was trying to get pregant with baby number one. I got pregnant after three months. When it took a little longer with baby number two and I had already re-read it, I ordered this book hoping it might have some other helpful tips for getting pregnant quickly. It refers to the "Taking Charge" book and provides other pretty basic tips that you could find online with a simple google search. Sorry... I just didn't find it that informative.

The only pre-pregnancy book I should have bought!
I hate to admit I bought at least a half dozen other books on pre-conception when my husband and I started thinking about starting a family. I am a real planner/researcher by nature and couldn't help myself from wanting to read everything ever written about pregnancy prep in the year or so before I was ready to actually start trying.

Well, let me save you some time and money: just get this book and read it cover to cover! That's all you need! If you're an over-achiever (or just like knowledge, like me) you should also get Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, and then you'll really be armed with tons of information. I honestly think TCOYF should be standard issue to every girl on her 18th birthday--I aced high school anatomy and college biology, and dutifully went to yearly OB-GYN check-ups for twenty years, and yet I learned SO MUCH about my own body that was somehow new to me at age 35, just by reading TCOYF.
