The secret to enlightenment and great sex is revealed to be one and the same in this groundbreaking manual for adventurous lovers. David Deida was trained for decades in the art of spiritual and sexual awakening. Now he presents the ultimate collection of skills for opening to the physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards of intimate embrace.

Provocative and direct, The Enlightened Sex Manual teaches you how to transform simple "skin friction" into the depths and embodiment of ecstasy; how to develop sexual abilities as gifts of heart rapture and bodily surrender; how to achieve the principal types of orgasm and all their varieties; and much more.

For men and women, singles and couples of every sexual orientation, The Enlightened Sex Manual provides a complete program for sustaining "whole-body recognition of love's light" in the wild play of sexuality.

I thought this was great
If you are becoming familiar with David Deida, then this book is one good place to start, especially if you are doing so as a couple. This book describes Deida's view of masculine/feminine polarity, sexual energy, sexual desire, and more. And Deida being Deida, it is about sex and spirituality and growth. The book gives the sense that we are being offered an ancient way or yoga or art. We get the sense that Deida has learned this tantric-esque wisdom from various teachers, and now he is transmitting his knowledge to us. Maybe that sounds strange, but I've come to trust his advice and insights. An audio CD-ROM is included, in which Deida describes a number of experiential exercises. A remarkable aspect about Deida is that some of what he says about women is counterintuitive to men, and some of what he says about men is counterintuitive to women. And you are likely to disagree with some of what he tells you about yourself and your sex. But when you test these things out with the...
A Program That Could Solve a Lot of Problems and Enrich Many Lives
Ken Wilber has described this as the only sex manual that you will ever need, and it is difficult to disagree with him. Though Mabel Iam's books are a fine complement to David's work.

David is controversial, but then what innovator is not? He writes and teaches from the perspective of 20 years work with hatha yoga, pranayama, t'ai chi and Tantra. One of the things which I most like about his work is the constant emphasis on the dance of dualities, which has been a major focus of my own work for more than two decades. False dichotomies, such as good/bad, male/female, winner/loser, have, like other false beliefs, caused great sadness and frustration, and it is so important for people to know that there is another way.

Highly recommended for adults who want to heal and enrich their lives.

Let's Skip the Witch Hunts
Just wanted to respond to these fear-arousing posts about David Deida being a "follower of a...demonically deluded cult leader". Curiously, these exact verbatim posts have been made to most of Deida's books listed on Amazon (I haven't checked them all). Seems like some kind of organized effort going on here to smear Deida.

I'm a pretty tolerant guy - everyone has a right to their own opinion, etc. But to suggest that David Deida (or Ken Wilbur for that matter) is a brainwashed follower of Satan, and that you will become infected from reading his stuff, seems pretty laughable to me. Any innovator worth his salt has been accused of the same thing, like, you know, DaVinci, Copernicus, Darwin, St. Francis, Martin Luther, Jesus of Nazareth, etc.

These two gifted thinkers, Deida and Wilbur, are cutting-edge intellectuals, ahead of their time. They are leaders, not followers. Neither has any interest in "controlling" you or what you think, although there are...

Winner of an iParenting Media Award, this picture book appeals to the visual strengths of students on the autism spectrum, with color photos of students demonstrating various social skills in the correct (and sometimes incorrect) way. The skills depicted are meant to be read, role-played, corrected when necessary, role-played some more and, finally, to be practiced by the student in real-life social situations. “Thought bubbles” show what people are thinking during these interactions (not always what you hoped!). Practical, engaging, and down-to-earth, this is a valuable tool to help teens navigate the often-mysterious rules of social conduct in everyday situations.

Helpful sections include:

  • Conversation
  • Building and Maintaining Friendships
  • Asserting Your Feelings
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Asking Someone Out on a Date
  • Dealing with School and Work
  • Dealing with Mistakes
  • Working with Others—Compromising
  • Job Interviewing

Important ideas for students and parents affected by Asperger's
While I think some of the students who could benefit from this book might find it a bit patronizing and beneath their level of maturity and intelligence (since it depends on pictures so much), there are some really valuable insights to be found for just about everyone with any degree of Asperger's Syndrome. The only improvement I would suggest is that more details on body language reading and face reading be included. For example, when Dr. Baker says to check first whether a potential friend looks receptive, exactly what should one look for in the facial expression and body posture? Dr. Baker gives some details on these things, but I think some Asperger's students might need more specific pointers.

Great resource for social skills
I have used this book with my students as a middle school speech pathologist. The pictures are a great resource for the students to visualize the right and wrong way to behave. They enjoy correcting the wrong pictures as part of therapy. An added bonus it that another book of Jed Baker's has worksheets and lessons that directly teach the social skills in the pictures. Truly a great resource for anyone who teaches social skills.

Very Helpful!
Although I haven't purchased this book, I have read a copy that I have borrowed from a library, and I think that it is very helpful.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I know that if there had been books like this 30 years ago, I would have learned much earlier in life what things are appropriate to do and say in what situation. It's too bad that there were no books like this until very recent years!

Enjoyable AND Informative - Definitely Worth the Read!
When I first read the title, How to Teach Life Skills to Kids with Autism or Asperger's, I wasn't sure exactly what it meant or how it would apply to me. After reading just a few pages, however, I was convinced that this was a message I needed to hear and that I could learn a lot from this book about how to help my son become a successful adult (and kid, for that matter)!

As Jennifer McIlwee Myers, the author and "Aspie at Large", puts it,

"No matter where a child is on the autism spectrum, and no matter where he or she is likely to end up, life skills count!"

While this is not an autobiography, the author draws freely on her own experience and that of her brother Jimmy, who has autism, to illustrate her points, and adds a lot of incredibly useful information by doing so, in my opinion. I also found her writing style to be extremely readable and greatly enjoyed the interjections of humor.

Just reading a few of the chapter titles themselves...
An inspiring story for all!
Jennifer Myers has given us quite a gift with her personal, touching first-hand account of growing up with undiagnosed Asperger's. From her experiences, she has learned which strategies help children become more independent as well as how to deal with schoolyard bullies and teasing. Jennifer trusts parents to do the right thing and uses humor to identify the tools and thinking to help reach and teach kids on the autism spectrum. This book should be required reading for all professionals in the field and offered to every family to instill hope and joy in parenting kids at all stages of development.

Susan Perlson, LCSW

A must-read for ASD families--a great read for ALL families
Temple Grandin personally commanded Jennifer Myers to write this book.

That's right, THE Temple Grandin heard a talk Myers gave, called her, insisted that Myers turn the talk into a book, and offered to write the foreward.

Thank God she did. This is a phenomenal book that makes an inescapable point: If you don't teach your kid the basic life skills, from how to order food at a restaurant to how to pick out groceries to how to be polite to police officers and teachers and other NT (neurotypical) humans, then your kid's world will always be much smaller than you--or probably they--want and need it to be.

On the other hand, if you learn what Myers teaches, and pass that on to your kids, there is an entire "Geek World" out there waiting to embrace your ASD kid. A valid, thriving world with high employability!

Myers is herself an "Aspie at large" whose personal experience of being undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and miraculously parented make for...

Includes activities to help your child:

  • Become a good listener and a good friend
  • Make school easier and more fun
  • Recognize his or her special gifts and build self-esteem
  • Practice planning ahead and learn responsibility

Review :
Some good activities
This book has some good activities to help children with ADHD master key skills, but many of the activities are "paper and pencil" and therefore not particularly engaging. Other books on this topic that I recommend:
ADHD: 102 Practical Strategies for 'Reducing the Deficit'

Simon Says Pay Attention: Help for Children with ADHD

Putting on the Brakes: Understanding and Taking Control of Your ADD or ADHD

Great Workbook!
We have found this workbook to have a great variety of topics that are helping our son with many of his area's of need. When he has had a difficult day, we look through the topics, find one that seems most appropriate and work though that section of the workbook together. It has helped him focus on the topics, think through issues, and has helped us discover some of the things that he is thinking and feeling but had not been able to express.

Good,practical,
I found this book to be not only useful in helping kids with ADHD but also with parents who wish to help their children cope better in life generally. The book has lots of practical skills, and activities for kids to do,but they are heavily pencil based which maybe difficult for some people. However, they are short exercises, which is great, from decision making, getting organised ,dealing with homework, controlling anger to specific behaviour. Many exercises could be done as part of a daily conversation or as a family activity to help reinforce what has been done from the book. Again, I think every family (ADHD or NOT) could benefit from many of these exercises. However there are two points which I think could be improved in this book.
1. The author constantly uses "kids with ADHD,many kids with ADHD,some kids with ADHD",and after a few exercises, it seems to drill into the child/parent that they are ADHD. So i would prefer the author dropped the ADHD label. After all the person...

Review :
Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD
As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

Great Book! Excellent insight into the struggles your teen may be facing.
Smart but Scattered Teens is a must for any proud parent of a teen coping with a learning disability. Unlike many similar books, it presents information and suggestions in a real-life, applicable manner. The authors present the material in an organized, readable, fashion, where a parent (or even a teen, for that matter) could read the book from cover to cover, or select individual sections most applicable to their situation.

The book also contains several hypothetical situations that many teens may find themselves in (think of speeding in a car). It then contains some interesting reactions, both from professionals and from real life teens, on how to respond, learn, and grow based on from such experiences.

Ultimately, if your teen could use a little, or a lot, of help developing the executive skills necessary to succeed in life, this book is for you.

A+

Excellent look at the unusual child
I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

Review :
Great for Parents
I noticed that a lot of reviews were written by special ed teachers and psychologists, and wanted to add mine as a parent. This book FINALLY shed light on the challenges my son faces at home and school. It not only gave me concrete tools and ideas to help him strengthen his executive skills, but also an understanding of what was going on, which led to more patience on my part. Nagging him to get organized and constantly reminding him to stay on task was not helping. His executive skill weaknesses were beginning to lead to low self-esteem and a "better not to try than to fail" attitude. This book has helped me to begin turning that around. It was recommended to me by a psychologist. If anyone has ever hinted that your child might be ADHD-- read this book before accepting any labels.

Facing my own weaknesses in helping my children
Another parent here. I have three highly gifted kids who nevertheless seem unable to accomplish simple tasks. A friend recommended this book, and it's forcing me to endure a complete paradigm shift, not only about my expectations for them, but of my own weaknesses in this area. Sure, I've had trouble staying organized, I start tasks only to leave them half-completed, and I feel like I have far more potential than I produce. But until I took the inventory for parents in this book, I didn't realize how truly weak my own executive skills are all around (unless I'm inspired, and then I'm a machine! ... just like my daughter). My husband took the quiz and -- not surprisingly -- his EF (executive function) skills are nearly off the charts on the other end. He laughed a little as he said he wondered how honest I was going to be, but he agreed with my self-assessment. Suddenly, I understand why a disastrous house sends me into tears, but he can get to work and make it spotless in a couple...

Review :
Amazing resource.
I've read a lot of self-help, pop-psych books targeted at dealing with strong emotions. Most of them seemed true & helpful at the time I was reading them, but fell apart when I tried applying them to life. This book is not only easy to use while you are using it, but it is easy to recall later in the day, or the week, or even a few months later, and easy to use the techniques. I even find myself suggesting techniques to friends who share emotionally-distressing situations with me. Later, my friends report that it was some of the best advice they've gotten.

I also have Don't Let Your Emotions Run Your Life: How Dialectical Behavior Therapy Can Put You in Control (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook), which seems to be the same general idea, but didn't seem to be as helpful for me. I just wish that therapists trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy were more widespread and easier to find. Highly...
Provides sensible and realistic ways to help yourself
I picked up the DBT workbook to learn how to help a good friend who suffers from bi-polar disorder. It improved our interactions with each other, and in working through the exercises I discovered practical ways to thwart depression and manage my own emotions. This book's for anyone who suffers from depression, anger, anxiety or just wants to have a little more control over their emotions.

Works Miraculously For Illnesses Other Than Borderline Personality Disorder
Without any exaggerations intended, this book has seriously saved my life and me from myself. I am 23 years old and ever since I was between 13-14, a certain darkness crept over me and everybody around me saw negative changes in me that even I couldn't understand at first. My parents figured it was just teen angst, something that will go away on it's own. At age 19 to 20-21, I was cutting myself and couldn't run away from the monster that whispers horrible things to me, telling me that I was unloved and that I should kill myself. At 22, I almost went with a plan to kill myself by hanging, and I got sent to a psych ward. Like always, nothing had helped.

This year, I almost lost the love of my life because of my constant mood swings, negative thoughts, suicidal tendencies, degrading myself through words and action, overreacting to everything in the worst ways, aggressive and abusive behavior, and generally being a complete nightmare to be with. I looked around for ways to...
